Brown Pelican
The brown pelican only recently came off the endangered species list, after nearly becoming extinct about 50 years ago.
Unfortunately, due to the large number of rookeries in Louisiana and other parts of the gulf coast, these birds are again in danger of disappearing from the planet.
After seeing so many images of these majestic birds covered in oil and struggling to walk, much less fly, I dug deep into my archives to find this image, taken back in 2005. I needed a reminder of how they really look, and how disgusted and angry I am at BP and all the folks that caused this catastrophe.
Take a trip somewhere to see the pelicans in the wild. It may be your last chance. Ever.
